Blue Devils topple Titans to open season with victory

Marietta opened its 2008 campaign with a strong performance on the road, beating the Northview Titans 33-7, the first meeting between the schools. The victory gives Coach Friday Richards his 100th career win, making his head coaching record 100-41.
Marietta got on the scoreboard first, scoring on its second possession of the game with a 9 play drive culminating in a 10 yard touchdown run by senior tailback, Kelvin Woods, who finished the game with 5 carries for 87 yards.
The Blue Devils added to its lead scoring late in the 2nd Quarter when quarterback Chris Tanzy hooked up with senior Deandre Dennis on an 18 yard touchdown toss. Sophomore kicker David Tolar added the extra point to push the score to 13-0.
Northview opened the second half with a 13 play touchdown drive, but the Big Blue promptly responded with junior Charles Francois returning a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown. Tolar converted the PAT to make the score 20-7.
Marietta added two more touchdowns in the 4th Quarter when Tanzy raced in for a 9 yard touchdown, after being set up with a 64 yard run by Woods. Tolar capped the score with his PAT. Junior tailback Greg Franklin got into the scoring act with a 41 yard TD scamper midway in the 4th Quarter. Franklin finished the game as the leading rusher with 138 yards on 15 carries. Tanzy was 4 of 7 for 54 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.
Defensive standouts included senior Zach Shelton (8 tackles, 2 sacks), junior Will Goodman (6 tackles, 1 sack), and senior Najja Johnson (6 tackles and 2 assists). Senior Stephen Hunter came up with a big interception in the 2nd Quarter.
The Blue Devils will host Cherokee Warriors next week at Historic Northcutt Stadium.
