Coach Wakefield joins the 2011 Blue Devil coaching staff as the Cornerbacks Coach. Prior to joining the Blue Devils, Coach Wakefield held the Cornerbacks position at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia for the 2010 football season. At Randolph Macon he assisted the team reach a 7-3 record. Coach Wakefield coached with Coach Meade and Coach Crittenden for two seasons (2008-2009) at Lee-Davis High School in Mechanicsville, Virginia where he held the defensive coordinator position. He carries special teams experience from Caroline High School in Bowling Green, Virginia, where he was a special teams coordinator as well as a co-defensive coordinator. During the 2007 football season Coach Wakefield helped the Caroline Cavaliers obtain its best record in school history of 8-2 and winning the district championship. A majority of Coach Wakefield’s experience stems from his nine years as the Secondary/Wide Receiver coach with St. Francis High School, a private school near Buffalo, New York. His experience with St. Francis included the team winning six league championships; holding the number one ranking in Western New York during the 2003 and 2004 seasons; and holding the 22nd ranking in the nation during 2004. Coach Wakefield graduated from the State of New York University at Brockport with a degree in Physical Education and Health. He received a master’s degree in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy. Coach Wakefield is certified personal trainer through American Council of Exercise as well as certified through Bigger, Faster, Stronger as a strength and conditioning coach. Coach Wakefield is excited about his recent move to Marietta in order to teach physical education at West Side Elementary. He and his wife, Mary, are both originally from Buffalo, New York. Mary is a First Vice President in Credit Risk Management for SunTrust Bank. They have a son, Cole (age 2).
