Dr. Oswald combines his love of medicine, his passion for children’s health and development, and his intellectual drive to improve patient outcomes through pioneering research in his practice at Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates.
Dr. Oswald earned his undergraduate degree (B.S. with honors) from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. He then entered medical school at the University of Florida, earning his MD degree, also with honors. After completing his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Emory University’s medical school in Atlanta, Georgia, he completed an additional year of fellowship training specifically in pediatric orthopaedics in San Diego, California. After his fellowship, Dr. Oswald returned to Atlanta and joined Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates, where he has a clinical and surgical practice in general pediatric orthopaedic surgery and is the medical director for the Pediatric and Young Adult Spine Center of Georgia. As medical director, Dr. Oswald coordinates the best care for Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates’ spine patients through the involvement of a superb team of POA surgeons, non-operative physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
In addition to and in conjunction with his practice at Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates, Dr. Oswald is an Assistant Professor in the Emory University Department of Orthopaedics and the Fellowship Director for the Emory Department of Orthopaedics Fellowship training program in pediatric orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Oswald is also the Director of the Scoliosis Screening program for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
In keeping with Dr. Oswald’s commitment to maximize outcomes for his pediatric patients, Dr. Oswald stays on the cutting edge of the field through participation in basic science research and the development of new surgical techniques and technologies. Dr. Oswald serves on the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America’s evidence-based medicine committee. He also serves on both the non-operative management committee and the program committee for the Scoliosis Research Society. Dr. Oswald is also a participant in two exclusive study groups of like-minded pioneering surgeons: the Spinal Deformity study group and the Chest Wall Spinal Deformity study group. He is also the only fellowship-trained video-assisted thoracoscopic spine surgeon in Atlanta.
Dr. Oswald has been a key technology researcher and innovator in growth modulation and future technologies including stapling and vertebral body tethering, minimally invasive growing rod technology, and vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR). He is the innovator of a minimally invasive spine surgery technique for the posterior approach to the spine. Right here at Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates, Dr. Oswald has his own team of accomplished and experienced researchers working with him on clinical outcomes registries, new product development, and basic science research.
In addition to a clinical and surgical practice in all facets of pediatric orthopaedics, Dr. Oswald has developed a deeper specialty in spinal deformity, including scoliosis and kyphosis, and neuromuscular disorders, including cerebral palsy, spasticity management, muscular dystrophy, and spinal muscular atrophy. Dr. Oswald also has a special interest in gait analysis and congenital foot disorders.
Dr. Oswald was raised in Florida and Germany and developed a passion for languages and international affairs. Dr. Oswald is fluent in Spanish and German, semi-fluent in French and has studied Mandarin Chinese, Russian and American sign language.
